Icons for Data Collection in Public Spaces

“[Sidewalk Labs] wants to create an image-based language that can quickly convey information to people the same way that street and traffic signs do. Icons on the signs would show if cameras or other devices are capturing video, images, audio or other information.”

Sidewalk Labs, an Alphabet subsidiary, worked with experts around the world created a range of icons to alert people as to what types of data collection might be occurring in the public realm. With digital privacy a growing issue, along with the proliferation of cameras and sensors in public spaces, the time is right to have this conversation.
